WARRAGUL BC "CARNIVAL OF BOWLS"
Monday 6th February saw the opening of Warragul's Annual Bowls Carnival. The official opening was performed by Noel Pullen of Major Sponsor, GSI. See under Mens' Section Results for the details of the various results.
Australia Day
The club ran a very successful "Australia Day " function. The main organizer was Peter Cusden, and he received considerable help from Gwen Bardon, Elsie Hefford, Pat Hammond, Mary Coyle, Vicky and Mick Malinowski, and the tournament committee. About 70 fronted for a game of bowls, an excellent barbecue, and a monster Raffle of Australiana. Bowls winners were Des Stephen's team of Sandra Porch and Lindsay Matthews. They won from Jimmy Moyle's team and Alison Matthews' team got best game. Below are some photos from the day. PS. not sure whether Marj Evison was born before or after Australia!!

Marge celebrates in typical fashion!
VALE Mick Evison
The Club was saddened by the death, last week, of long time member, Gordon (Mick) Evison. Mick was a member for over twenty years and did considerable work around the club, particularly with the Bar Committee. All our sympathies to Edna and Family.
Ladies Tournament Fours
Our Ladies Section conducted a very successful Fours Tournament on Friday 20th January with teams from a wide area. With two big wins the Korumburra team took the honours for the day. They are pictured below.

Congratulations !
Alison Matthews and Roy Hammond are now accredited National Umpires
Legacy Triples January 7th
Legacy Mixed Triples attracted a relatively small field but an enjoyable day was had by all. Sponsored by Souttar Motors the major prize money was taken out by Peter Gallasch (s), Graeme Davis, and Janette Gallasch from Peter Phillips' Yallourn team.
Warragul Hosts Keane Barry Shield.
On Tuesday 3rd January Warragul hosted the Keane Barry shield under very trying and hot conditions. However our excellent facilities, superb catering by our ladies, and of course our great Bar staff, ensured that a great event ensued. The only downside was our bowling performance which was mediocre with Warragul finishing midfield. Ken Taylor's rink won two games and Peter Gallasch's rink managed only one win.
Kevin Stevens is our Mens' Singles Champion 2011/12.
Christmas Dinner 2011
What a great night at the Club for our Christmas Dinner on Wednesday 14th December. Over 100 members and friends sat down to an absolutely superb meal of Turkey and Pork with all the trimmings. Of course the dessert was traditional Christmas Pudding. Alison Matthews and her catering team can feel very justly proud of their efforts. Our raffles were drawn and the major winners were Cake, Gwenda Mason, and Hamper, Mary Coyle. Games and Carol singing, led by Ken Scammell, filled out the evening nicely, and many happy faces were seen leaving the Club. Have a look at our Photo page under Christmas 2011 to see for yourself!

President Roy helping with the dirty dishes!

Thoroughly enjoying the meal!

Especially for Joe!!
On Thursday 8th December, Bowls Victoria Special Representative, Geoff Burt, presented four of our members with their Super Veterans badges. The short ceremony was conducted during the afternoon tea break of our Thursday Pairs. Those presented with their OBE'S were Wilf Boscombe, Stan Grando, Lindsay Matthews and Roy Saunders. They are pictured below with Geoff in the background.

The Gippsland RSL "Dave Elliott Shield" event was conducted at Warragul on Sunday 27/11/11 and was excellent on all fronts. Our greens were marvellous and showed the great value of having synthetic surfaces as play was not in any way compromised by the weather. Philip Island won the day defeating Morwell in the play off.
The Final of the AER Mixed Pairs at Warragul has been won by Peter and Janette Gallasch after a good battle with Edna Adams and Ted Holland. Janette and Peter will represent Warragul well in the upcoming finals.
The Annual Cup Day Triples has been run and won with Jack Pater's Heathmont team proving to be the best from Clivee Padgham's team. The winners are pictured below

To compound our losses word has just been received that former President, Green Keeper, and Life Member, Don Fennell has also passed away. RIP Don.
Tragic news for the club today (24/10) with the sudden death of former Ladies' Section President and long time member, Barbara McLean. Barbara will be sorely missed by our Club.
Alray Triples
The Annual Alray Triples was played on Sunday 11/9, and saw 26 teams fighting it out on what was really an uncomfortable Winters Day. There were some great bowls played however, and Jim Lawrence's Moe team emerged as the winners just in advance of Ian Smethurst's Drouin/Warragul team.
Warragul BC was thankful for all teams for their efforts in playing under adverse conditions. Once again our decision to install the synthetic greens was vindicated by the ability to successfully conduct this event.
Opening Dinner 2011/12
September 3rd saw our club celebrate the opening of the new season with our traditional Opening Dinner. Over 80 guests enjoyed a chicken and beef meal with salads and desserts provided by our marvellous ladies.
Invited guests included Cr Dianne Blacwkood, Mayor of Baw Baw Shire, Barbara White, Chair of West Gippsland Bowls Division, Pat Hiriart, WGBD Board Member, and reresentatives from Yarragon, Neerim, Longwarry. and Drouin Bowling Clubs. The season was officially opened by Barbara White.Below are a few photos from the opening dinner:-

Sectional play in the Australian Indoor Singles Championship was conducted at Warragul on a very cold and wet Saturday 18th June. Despite the appalling weather conditions all games were completed and the greens held up remarkably well. The highlight of the days play was the defeat of Lee Schraner by Jim Oliver of Garfield. Lee was a raging favorite to win his section.Section winners were Jim Oliver (Garfield), Glenn Bainbridge (Cranbourne), Keith Button (Korumburra), and Nigel Cowdery of Clayton. They now proceed to knockout play at other venues.

The first official day of winter saw 72 bowlers celebrating at WBC by playing 2 Bowl Triples. The day was magic with beautiful sunshine, about 20 degrees, no breeze, perfect greens and great company. For results see under Mens' results.

Teams travelled from as far afield as Hawthorn, Fern Tree Gully, Cockatoo, and Korumburra. Three games of twelve ends soon sorted out the teams and 4 teams emerged unbeaten with the eventual winner being Andy Robertson's Korumburra team with Clive Padgham's Warragul team next best. John Leighton's Drouin team won the best game. The winning team is pictured below.
A Special Happening Following the recent flooding around Victoria and the substantial damage to many Victorian Bowls Clubs, the Board of the Warragul Bowling Club decided to make a donation to help one of these clubs, and after careful deliberation it was decided that Cockatoo Bowling Club would be the Club to receive our donation. At the Invitation Day on March 27th Cockatoo had two teams present and players included their Secretary, Anthony Young, and Treasurer, Max Moody. Consequently Board Chairman, Roy Hammond, at the afternoon tea break, presented Max and Anthony with a cheque for $2000 to assist in their club's recovery. To say it was received with gratitude would be a major understatement. Pictured below are Roy, Max and Anthony at the cheque presentation.

Ladies win Tilbury Shield On Wednesday March 16th our Ladies won the Kate Tilbury Shield for the second succesive season. Led by Grace Webb our team was Mavis Young, Betty Heywood, and Margaret Nichol. Their combined age was 335 years but I'm not going to divulge individual ages. A thoroughly deserved win.
Men win Barry Shield. A great effort at Yallourn BC on January 4th saw Warragul BC win it's third Barry Shield. This is played by teams not represented in Division 1. Joe Coyle, Jim Moyle, and Lindsay Matthews have played in all three winning teams.
